Are you an EE-student and you still haven't made any PCBs?!

To many it may come as a surprise that PCB layout and assembly are not part of the standard curriculum of Electrical Engineering. This while it's one of the most fulfilling, fun and recognizable parts related to electronics in general.

This is why Scintilla's MasterCLASS is organising a PCB layout and assembly course!
During this course Sintecs BV and Elect BV (Experienced compagnies in layout and assembly respectively) will be guiding us through the process of going from schematic to product machining by providing presentations and touring the assembly process of an PCB you can take home at the end.

Details

This course is about PCBs.
During part 1&2 (4&5 April) you will learn about layout: how to go from schematic to the actual placing of the components on the board and how to wire them up properly. What do you have to keep in mind? First there will be a general presentation about some of the ins and outs of board-layout then after a short break we will move into trying to make our own layout for a 433MHz transmitter and receiver.
The goal is mostly to try to create a proper design. The first day will be mostly presentation and a small start on your own layout. The second day will allow you to finish your design and ask for advice from an expert. The goal is to learn by experimenting and asking/hearing other people's questions.
This evening will be hosted by Henk Mengerink from Sintecs who has over 20 years of experience in designing PCBs.

During part 3 (14 March) you will learn about the assembly of PCBs. We will do this by visiting Elect on location. There will be buses on campus (exact place&time TBD) to take you to Elect for a tour. In the end you get to take home a PCB with the same circuit as which you laid out. This PCB is a pre-tested layout for the transmitter and receiver from Sintecs. This PCB will be assembled before your own eyes in a pick and place machine, which can place up to 15 parts per second!

Preparation

You do have to put in some effort for this course. We'd like to spend most of our time on the theory and practice of the layout-process. To keep basic questions about tooling to a minimum we ask you to install Mentor Pads pro beforehand and play with it a bit. You will claim a student license that is valid for 1 year.

Dinner

There will not be any dinner organized by Scintilla for this event. However, before each course there will be a group of MasterCLASS members and other Scintilla members going to the Waaier. The price of a menu is € 4.85. The price of a combi deal meal (meal, water and dessert) is € 6.00.

Fees

The course will be completely free to follow.
However.. to entice you to show up we do charge a no-show fee of €10,- if you don't show up. We also expect you to have installed the tooling beforehand and played with it a bit.

We recommend going to both parts because it will be a lot of fun and otherwise you wouldn't be able to get one of the boards home. If you really want to come to part 1&2 but cannot attend part 3 please sign up with a comment and email us at masterclass@scintilla.utwente.nl

If the signup is full and you want to go, make sure to sign-up on the reserve list. If there are any last minute dropouts you might be picked. Also if we notice that a course is really in demand we might be able to manage negotiate another version of it next year.
